(English translation to the above comment in Burmese)

Dear Myanmar Brothers and Sisters,

Please calm down and think carefully before you make a comment. I believe that all of us don’t want to cause the racial hatred between Singaproeans and Myanmars.

I noticed that the Admin has already made some changes to the inapproriate original title to this article. Besides, this article made a reference to the Straitstimes report and that could be the reason why Miss Yin Yin Oo’s name appeared in it. The only mistake, I think, in this article is that the author tried to judge her professional competency only by her language skill alone. But the main objective of the article is to criticize the Foreign Talent policy (The excessive import of foreign workers) of the Singapore Government, not to insult Myanmar Nationals. Singaporeans do have their right to criticize their government’s policies and no one can urged them not to.

In my opinion, one’s professional skill could not be judged by English language skill alone. There are other foreigners such as Germans, Chinese, Koreans, Italians, etc., who can’t speak proper English but they are doing well in their fields here in Singapore.

Furthermore, If someone criticizes our English language skill, please don’t be offended. Due to the poor education system and the lack of English speaking enviroment in our country, we must accept that most of us can’t speak as good as most of the Singaporeans. They have only one disadvantage that some native speakers can’t understand their accent and pronunciation. But generally, they are better than us in English language. If we accept that fact, we won’t be so easily offended by their view.

If some Singaporeans show their disapproval to the foreigners, we should try to understand their worry about job insecurity and forgive them for that.

On the other hand, Singaporeans should also stop blaming wrongly on the foreigners who come to work in Singapore. We are here just because the companies are hiring us and the Singapore government approved our work permits. No one deserves the blame except the FT policy itself. So if you want to protect your jobs, you should urge your goverment to change the foreign talent policy or urge it to implement the minimum wage policy.

Finally, please avoid the comments which can cause misunderstanding and racial hatred among us.

With best regards,
Ko Paw (Padauk-Yeik)

Mingalaba! We are not against any race or nationality. The gist of the article is simply to highlight the ruling party’s lax immigration guidelines in allowing too many foreigners on S-passes to work in Singapore when their jobs can easily be taken over by locals. To be fair, Burmese are generally quite hardworking, honest and genial by nature compared to some others. For those of us who have been to Burma, you will agree that Burmese are among the most hospitable people in the world. We apologize if you we have hurt the feelings of our fellow Burmese friends in anyway. Khay-zu-din-ba-leh!

That summary is acceptable.
Please see point of view from Singaporean.

I don't know why they want to fight each other.
Some comment are so rude.

I think the comments can reach 1000.

When I received via g-mail from my friend as a link, the comments only 300.
Presently 662.

Thanks for your warning posting " STOP STOP STOP "

It is dangerous TRIP.

We, burmese, are becoming a scapegoat in the political fight between the ruling party of Singapore and the opposition. It’s sad that an innocent Burmese woman, here I picture her as an honest and hardworking foreign worker in SG for her sincerity in confessing that she needs to improve her English skill and her desire to study, has been picked up and eventually ended up at damage to the image of Burmese immigrants. But, we should seriously take this as something we need to contemplate on how we should be prepared to be world-class qualified foreign workers and to avoid further insults aimed at our inefficiencies in all fields. On the other hand, we should be wise enough by practicing maximum constraint, using proper languages, and showing maturity in our responses so as not to be pawns in their political games

after scrolling the comments in this farting in the lion city forum woken up the little cyber
kaepo inside me to reflect my days in kaisu city and chip in some myanmese Thar Gi’s wisdoms.

Some questions came up…..

Q) How much proficient English must be for a bean counter (accountant) or an engineer or a tech professional will need to survive for the job?

A) Depends, if her boss and colleagues speak with
Mah and Lahs…. then not much… Afterall, SMEs are full of those. Not all of Singaporeans speak
English with crisp her Majesty English or Yankee’s English.
So in Ah Lone’s world, Thargi
and Shwe Mi can survive especially in technical jobs (accounting
is afterall, a technical job)….

Q) Should she be replaced by a local who has lower local
(paper) qualification?

A) Yes and no, it will depend on the policy makers and when the Singapore’s macro economy is shifting towards service economy and island state needs 6 Millions
(I dont know why 6 is a magic number but 6 Millions is what you need for a service economy to sustain.)

So if I were a policy maker
in Singapore, if the state
needs to rump up her population
to 6M from 5M, I will opt for citizens of a country whose nation will less likely to become a developed nation soon (it may be easier to integrate a Malaysian, however, Malaysia today has
more opportunities than back
then and so Burmese are not a
bad choice, when they can do
their jobs, when most of them
are law abiding people. If they can and will compensate their
weak English with hard work and
motivation. Why not……

If you need to rump up numbers,
when you need cannon fodders,
you shop around for Burmese.

Q) Do Burmese (born and educated in the land of peasants) qualify as Foreign Talents?

A) Some of them can be and even Ms. Yin Yin can be qualified
as FT for some reasons. It is not because Burmese are too good but Burmese aer competing with Singaporeans at one tier below.

The best Indians and Chinese
head to Silicon valley or
London. Top of the creme Malaysians will not come to Singapore, instead they’d go
to USA or UK. Smartest Thais
will go for Harvard than NUS.
Top Indonesians will go to
the Netherlands or Germany for graduate (doctorate) studies.
Even smart Cambodians can go
to the France, rather than coming
to Singapore. Whoelse left in neighbourhood, who will come to Singapore to do jobs, to get higher education? Burmese……

Yes Burmese are benefited from Singapore state’s generosity.
But if a Burmese student of University calibre do come and compete with Singaporeans of Polytechnic calibre,
the party who benefit will be Singaporean classmates.
If a Burmese who normally would
be heading to Stanford or
GeorgiaTech comes to Singapore
to compete with NUS or NTU
students, again both parties'd
gain. Infact, what Burmese might
have lost for he was not agile
to prepare for the English proficiency, if his family were not affluent enough to send him
to the United States for 4 years college or graduate school, if
he was not aware of opportunities exist, if he was not confident
of his own abilities to compete there, what he lost is gain for his Singaporean classmates.

Burmese are scavangers who are eager to feed on what Singaporeans
had thrown under the table, we are filling in the voids which Singaporeans had left behind..
We are doing jobs a level
below than we should be doing
in Burma. For instance, a Burmese engineer in Singapore has friends who are senior engineers or directors in Burma, a Burmese
polytechnic student in Singapore has friends graduated from
Burmese universities (his previous classmates), a petty cash accountant in Singapore may have finance manager friends in Burma.

In a nut shell, most of Burmese in Singapore (and overseas) are doing jobs a level below than they are trained to do (back home). They are forefeiting their opprotunities
back at home for better pay in overseas.

In time they will improve their English, they will learn skills, they will stop wasting time (in forums threatening their hosts) or they will stop kaepoing and doing real work those will improve their well being in the host community.

My two pyars worth of advice…..

Here is the article from The Straits Time.

Here is how Temasek Review manipulated :

The Straits Time article

Foreigners flock to CC language classes

Myanmar national Yin Yin Oo, 26, who has been an accounts executive in Singapore for more than a year, said she was at the 'intermediate' level in reading and writing, but needed help with spoken English, so she signed up for the classes at the community club.

She said in Mandarin: 'English is needed at work to communicate with clients and contacting people. I feel my English standard is very bad.'

The Temasek Review article

Foreign worker who needs help in spoken English working as “accounts executive” in Singapore

The Straits Times reported today of a 26 year old Myanmar national Yin Yin Oo signed up for free English classes at a Community Club because she needed “help” in spoken English.
She has been working in Singapore as an “accounts executive” for over a year. While it is not revealed what she does exactly, it is highly unlikely that she is a professional accountant by training when she admits that “she was at the ‘intermediate’ level in reading and writing”.

In all likelihood, Ms Yin is probably doing some simple book-keeping at a local SME which employed her due to lower wage demands. With due respect to Ms Yin, her job can be easily taken over by any Singaporean with a ITE or “O” level certificate.
The ruling party has been defending its “foreign talent” policy on the ground that foreigners are needed to fill vacancies in certain sectors shunned by locals such as construction, nursing and IT support services.

I do agree Ko Paw’s comment!

Here it comes to think about why we are living at oversea leaving our parents or relatives behind. The pain of parting has not lessened over the years for me. What are our objectives? What is our goal? Do we run away from military regime? Or do we expect to get higher pay or living status? I say everybody has their unique reason on their own.

We have to discriminate between minor and major things impacting to our own objective. Avoiding minor things and overcome to major things leading to our objective. Has the government asked our guys to pack things? If so, it would become major issue. We would have to do more consolidated each others.

Sometime, I feel our guys are very simple including myself and behave cowardly. One of my previous jobs, there were three Burmese and five Scandinavian colleagues forming eight of team. Time to fight to American boss, another two Burmese guys loudly opposed behind the curtain. Other colleagues were simply caught their trap. These two old coward guys avoided to express disagreement officially and stepped out to sign the opposed letter finally by giving us many excuses of having family. At that time I was single. At the end of the day, what happen? We lost job except these two old guys. Were they wise?

My point is here, if they didn’t want to sign off officially, kept quiet! I saw many Burmese guys at oversea and only few could take enough courage to disclose what their own opinion is. Most of them are speak loudly in crowd. If someone threaten or persuade them, they simply response and disappear in any seconds.

I have also seen many Burmese guys so-called themselves as politician. Some are with family seeking refuge from wealthy governments. After granting as refugee, their lives switch to paradise spending provided money by doing nothing. They say they are waiting opportunity/chance to get change. I can’t image if those people would become politician after our people get true democracy. May be they are disgraced politician.

I salute true politician and those who sacrificed their lives for democracy. I never forget those 88 images with my own eyes in front of my house when I was only primary students. When opening fire at Sule, most were never retreated and never fall out. They knew their leaders and colleague were already fallen down in front of them. But they kept tightly and marched forward. It’s not only a single day. As they were already aware by words of mouth, the following day other waves came in and sacrificed their lives as well.

In 2007, I saw different scene on internet, I must say totally different. When opening fire, a few were left; most of them flew away and disappeared. With the courage of 88 and by courtesy of nowadays media advantages, there was a bright future, I dare to say. And so what! Today our courage is fighting of jaw-jaw war. People are only like to fight on internet.

Can you guess how many our people would stand out with their naked face by sacrificing their jobs and supporting our girl? I think not much but in forum too many.

In sum, I suggest you all to fight for our lives. Get our goal. March to destination. In the mean while, avoiding non-sense talking and lazy fighting.

Thanks you all.

Well you have seen a different day, I think my fellow Burmese are cowards after experiencing the frontal confrontation with a squad in 6th August 1988. I was in in high school, on that day, we saw the crowd from Pegu with flags waving, banners flying and so we walk with crowd near the van guard.
We joined from 37th street and we were confronted by the army platoon (about 20 to 30 soldiers led by a captain) closer to the Food and Beverage Building at the junction of 40th street and Mahabandoola road.

To their credit, the army officer and his men followed the rules of engagement (on that particular day but I cannot tell more about other platoons and other venues as I was never shoot by our own army at close range again). So at first the officer asked us to stop then they shoot (in the air) and on the first gun fire, the crowd runs like chickens. Being 15 and naive, we were quite late to run and we were saved by a monk who shouted us to get behind the traffic signal boxes. So that is what I have seen on that day. I guess Burmese girls may be braver, and teens may be naive and may charge at gun fire as young people everywhere are used by politicians as replaceables, commodities to achieve their agendaas and goals.

So we might have been on different days. From that day and later, I do not believe our own hypes that we are brave people.

We, Burmese men, are chickens!!!

No problem. We are poor at English because we have our own language for daily use. For Singaporean they don't have their own language so they speak Singlish (so-called English) and Chinese. Be proud of not to be a Singaporean. We have many important things they don't have. We have our own language to write, to speak and to read. We have our own new year. We have our own proverbs and many many more.
